Each winter the eagles gather at the rivers to await the spawning salmon. Once the salmon have spawned they die and make easy pickings as eagle feed.

Eagle Bird: Scientific Name:

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Alaska, winter, Homer, Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus

The bald eagle is a great subject for bird pictures.

Bird Pictures: Scientific Name:

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

As seen in my selection of bird pictures, the Bald Eagle is a coastal dwelling bird which is found only in North America. They mainly eat fish which they can spot from 1 mile or 1.6 kilometres away, and then they catch by swooping down and picking the fish up in their talons. They can generally only hold about 5 pounds or 2.26 kilograms in their talons.

Baby Eagle

Stock photo of a Baby Eagle, American Bald Eagles

Baby Eagle: Scientific Name:

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Stock photo of a Baby Eagle. This Baby Eagle was almost fearless of us, probably out of ignorance. This Baby Eagle appeared bigger than the adults because of the longer flight feathers which are useful for stablizing the younger birds while learning to fly. Once this baby eagle reaches about the age of 5 years old, he will lose the mottled brown and white feathers and they will be replaced by the familar adult feathers of black with a white head.

Fly Like An Eagle

Fly Like an Eagle, America's National Emblem

Fly Like An Eagle: Scientific Name:

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

To Fly like an Eagle is to fly at speeds of about 65 miles or 104 kilometres per hour in level flight, and up to 150 to 200 miles or 240 to 320 kilometres per hour in a dive. Bald Eagles can fly to altitudes of 10,000 feet or 3050 metres or more, they can soar aloft for hours by using natural wind currents and thermal updrafts to give them lift. It really gives meaning to Fly like an Eagle.
